At the Richard Barnes Academy, we believe that literacy skills open doors for students in the real world. We intend to teach a curriculum that is progressive and allows students the opportunities to be inspired through an understanding of characters and their worlds through texts, as well as build secure foundations of literacy skills in reading, writing and oracy. We strive to deliver a carefully sequenced and ambitious curriculum to equip students with the skills needed to become articulate, confident individuals. We aim to regularly celebrate students’ English achievements. We want our curriculum to be engaging, and to break down barriers of learning and build confidence they may have missed in mainstream education for them to find a love for English and use it as a ‘bridge’ between our school and mainstream education, or the outside world of work.
